Defense Medicine for Modern Health

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Dr. Lon Jones, DO introduces Defense Medicine — a paradigm that supports the body's natural defenses rather than suppressing symptoms. From nasal xylitol research to patient-centered preventive care, discover a smarter approach to health.

The Paradigm Shift

What Modern Medicine Gets Wrong About Illness

For a century, healthcare has treated symptoms as enemies to suppress and germs as targets to exterminate. Dr. Lon Jones presents a radical, evidence-based truth: supporting gateway defenses and negotiating with microbes heals faster, costs less, and prevents the next crisis.

Fever is not a disease — it is an evolutionary defense. Bacteria are not enemies to carpet-bomb — they are living organisms to negotiate with. When you stop fighting the body's natural gates, true healing begins.

01 Revolutionary Pillar

Stop Suppressing the Body's Gateway Defenses

Fevers, mucosal washing, and stomach pumps aren't malfunctions — they are intelligent, evolved survival mechanisms. Supporting the airway and GI tract primary gateways restores health naturally.

Key Evidence

Oral rehydration & nasal mucosal support

02 Revolutionary Pillar

Negotiate With Microbes Instead of Escalating War

Antibiotic warfare creates superbugs. Based on evolutionary biology (Paul Ewald): when you alter mucosal environments with glycan decoys like xylitol, bacteria adapt to become friendly commensals rather than destructive pathogens.

90%+ infection reduction via non-antibiotic adherence blockade

Our Philosophy

Three Pillars of Defense Medicine

Common Sense Medicine is built on the belief that supporting the body's own defenses — rather than overriding them — leads to better outcomes, lower costs, and healthier communities. Read the foundational essay →

Respiratory Defense & Mucosal Immunity

The nose is the gateway to respiratory health. Xylitol-based nasal sprays assist the body's natural nasopharyngeal washing, reduce bacterial colonization, and help prevent allergies, asthma, sinus infections, and ear infections.

  • Supports natural airway defenses
  • Xylitol acts as a glycan decoy for pathogens
  • Pennies a day vs. dollars in treatment

Health Savings & Patient Responsibility

Prevention is dramatically less expensive than treatment. Empowering patients with simple, evidence-based tools — like regular nasal hygiene — reduces healthcare costs while placing responsibility for daily health back in patients' hands.

  • Prevent problems before they start
  • Reduce chronic disease burden
  • All book profits support the foundation

Defense Medicine vs. Symptom Management

Modern medicine often suppresses the very defenses that protect us. Defense Medicine honors symptoms as the body's adaptive responses and supports physiological systems — rather than hobbling them with drugs that treat effects, not causes.

  • Paradigm shift from treatment to prevention
  • Foods with drug-like effects
  • Evidence-based holistic approaches

About

Dr. Lon Jones, DO

Dr. Lon Jones is a board-certified osteopathic family physician with over four decades of experience practicing in rural New Mexico. He is the founder of Common Sense Medicine, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation dedicated to research on foods with drug-like effects and the paradigm of defense medicine.

After reading about Finnish research showing xylitol chewing gum could prevent recurrent ear infections, Dr. Jones developed a xylitol-based nasal spray to help his granddaughter — an experiment that grew into clinical practice results showing over 95% reduction in infections, and ultimately the creation of Xlear nasal spray.

Together with his colleague and wife, Jerry Bozeman, Dr. Jones continues to promote defense medicine, fund research, and educate patients and physicians on the power of supporting — rather than suppressing — the body's natural defenses.
